Upper Manhattan Borough Meeting

The New York is Our Home! citywide campaign is organizing tenants to fight to preserve affordable housing in New York by changing unfair rent regulation laws.

The Upper Manhatten Borough Meeting was the third in a series of Borough Meetings happening across the city, all leading up to a massive Affordable Housing Rally on May 23rd expected to draw thousands of New Yorkers.

A full house turned out to last week's Upper Manhattan Borough Meeting. 182 people, mostly from tennant associations in Harlem, filled the room before security started turning people away. Elected officials at the meeting included Councilmember Melissa Mark-Viverito, Councilmember Miguel Martinez and staff from State Senator Bill Perkins, Speaker Christine Quinn, Congressman Rangel, Assemblyman Keith Wright, Councilmember Robert Jackson and Councilmember Inez Dickens.

Discussion focused on the May 23rd "Hands Around Stuy-Town" Affordable Housing Rally. Expect a strong Upper Manhattan contingent at the rally. Councilmembers Melissa Mark-Viverito and Miguel Martinez pledged to fill 4 buses with people for the rally.

Join us at the May 23rd Rally - RSVP today!

Re: New York City approval of Rent Increases.(2008-2009)

To all concerned.

New York City approval of a 4.5% for 1 year leases and a 8.5% for a 2 year leases is unbelievable and uncomprehensible in this time of an economic slowdown/recession.

With prices skyrocketing out of control such as food, gas, insurance and now rents, it is a wonder how people could afford to eat and survive.

Landlords are always crying about their cost going up but most slum landlords refuse to supply their tenants with the necessary services required by law.

Case in point, my landlord refuses to supply us with heat during the cold winter months forcing us to ware our jackets, hats, scarfs while inside and at the same time charging us a fuel cost charge.

The laws which are governed by both the city and state of New York, state that when the outside temperature is 50 degree or lower , the heat must be on at all times but my landlord refuses to abide by the laws.

50% of people salaries go towards their rents each and every month but the salries remain stagant throughtout the course of the years.

Big cities such as New York are pushing out the Middle and working class and are not considering the consequences of their actions or where to place them.
We need affordable housing now for everyone.

Rents should be determined on the basis of what a person's ability to pay and should be proving to stop those who might otherwise not be entitled to such decreases.

Thank You.

Sincerely,

Re: NYC City Councilmember/Council Speaker Christine Quinn:
I have known Christine Quinn for several years and she is currently the front runner to be the next Mayor of the city of New York in 2013.
I strongly disagree that Miss. Quinn has what it takes to be the next mayor of the New York City, how can we trust and expect her to run the city of New York as Mayor if she can’t even control her councilmembers from getting in to trouble, she has a tendency to look the other way when it involves her councilmembers.
Miss. Quinn also has a tendency to make empty promises and give false hopes to people in need., she really talks out of ass.
Some of her current councilmembers have been involved with stealing discretionary funds for their own personal use and have either been found to be guilty and who are currently in jails, she has also distributed those funds to fictions organizations.
Miss. Quinn’s track records for overturning the will of the people by allowing certain elective officials to continue running for the same office when the voters have spoken about term limits
Miss. Quinn’s platform was to clean up City Hall, but to date has done nothing to keep her word; she is too involved with making a name for herself and rubbing shoulders with business people, the very same people who are ripping off taxpayers every single day.
Miss. Quinn has stated several times that she was going to put a stop to the member items and pork slush funds but today hasn’t done a damn thing about it, she continues to align herself with corrupted, unscrupulous people and then there was her promise to protect each and every voter and give everyone a say in policies, but I guess that changed, because when she decided to push down the throats of the voters by forcing Gay Marriage, she has violated her trust and her duties, Miss. Quinn says that everyone has a say but when it involves something that efforts, her, then everyone else has no say in anything.
Miss. Quinn has violated the trust of the Gay Community and the voting public, she say one thing but does another, Miss. Quinn can’t be trusted with anything, she is nothing more than a lying, two face career polician, whose only concern is for herself and her image.
If the people of the New York City are smart, they would not cast their vote for Christine Quinn, but rather for someone else who they can control to make sure that those people put in office will actually do what the voting public wants and needs, Miss. Quinn is nothing more than a pathological liar like the rest of all the other elective officials , I have only met two elective officials who actually have the voting people’s interest at heart, unlike Miss. Quinn who has been known to flip-flop on everything she says.
I can personal tell you that she has made me empty promises and false hope when she said she was going to help me when I had my lawsuit against the New York Yankees, the very same organization that Miss. Quinn has sucked up to for money and tickets.
Don’t vote for Christine Quinn for mayor, you will be making the biggest mistake of your lives.
These are my own personal opinions and beliefs from seeing Miss. Quinn in action.
Thank You.
Sincerely,

Hon. Christine C. Quinn

Dear. Hon: Council speaker Christine Quinn:
I am taken this opportunity to express my displeasure with you for your support for the New York Yankees Organization and for your continued betrayal to me and other members of the gay community.
I would like a straight forward answer from you as to why you would even consider showing your support for an organization and its players who have attempted to rape and sodomy me 17 years ago.
What were you thinking of?
You and Tom Duane both have betrayed me when my case was made public back then and you both promised to help me and support me which of course both of you did nothing but make a bunch of empty promises and let me down.
You claim to support the gay community and stamp out discrimination of any kind, but that seems to only apply when it serves your own purposes and personal agenda
I will not standby and support any candidate that openly outright lies to me and others and who continues to be a lying, two faced hypocrite.
I don’t support flip floppers, that is why I intend to show my support for your rival Public Advocate Bill De Blasio, at least he stands by his principals and doesn’t support anyone who discriminate against anyone.
I also am letting you know that I will do everything to my power to inform every member of the voting public not to support you or even vote for you until you do the right thing and change your warped way of thinking.
You can’t say one thing and turnaround and do another.
I am very disappointed with you and I really truly hope you can live with yourself.
Thanks for nothing.
I will do everything I can to ensure that you lose the election.
Enjoy your down fall, I know I will.
Sincerely,
